November 28

Our measurement module has students up and moving throughout the classroom.  Students are making estimates, choosing the appropriate measurement tool, and recording their measurements using unit labels.  We've measured with inches, feet, and yards.  This week the students will be introduced to centimeters and meters, as well as begin a measurement project.

In reading, we will be reading multiple non-fiction books on one topic.  We will be learning how to find information that goes together and builds on what we already read.  Students will be discussing similarities and differences in their books.

Our All About Matter books are almost ready to be published! This week students will begin writing their glossaries, table of contents, and covers.  The students are becoming experts!

This week we will be taking a virtual field trip to Plimoth Plantation! (http://www.plimoth.org/)

Students will explore the Mayflower and learn about the first Thanksgiving feast.

We will be talking about what it means to be thankful and writing about things we are thankful for.

This week we will continue to work with measurement.  Students will be creating their own yard sticks and measuring larger distances.

If you have any of these supplies at home, we would love some donations!

- paper towel tubes
- toilet paper tubes
- buttons
- ribbon/yarn
- small items (beans, old toys, old cards, erasers, etc.)
- anything else you or your child finds that would be fun to measure!

Students are reading non-fiction texts in the classroom.  We have been focusing on keywords and reading to understand what these keywords means so that we can understand more about a topic.  Please continue to have your student read nightly!

November 7

We had a busy week in Second Grade! Students made Oobleck and had some great discussions around it's state of matter.

We worked on more problem solving in math and continued to show multiple methods to solve problems.

This week we will begin our measurement module in math.  Students will be making their own rulers. We will begin writing our All About Matter books in writing, and continue to read informational books in reading.

Thank you all for meeting with me last week at Parent Teacher conferences. A few reminders I wanted to send home:

1. Seesaw - Please log into your child's Seesaw account. Through out the year I will be updating their portfolios with words they are working on reading or spelling, math facts or skills to practice, and of course their selfies.

2. Homework - Please have your child continue to read nightly. On occasion your child may come home with practice work to be completed at home.  This is for extra repetitions in a skill area to help your child grow and learn. For those of you looking for some home extensions, Mr. Dutton has a list of links students can use at home.  Check them out on his website http://www.sau90.org/centre-school/technology/pages/websites-used-at-centre

Important Dates:
Field Trip on Wednesday November 9th
No School on Friday November 11th
